The Blue Crane - South Africa's national bird

This beautiful bird is only
found in Southern Africa.
There are about 21 000 Blue Cranes left on Earth.
Traditionally, only Zulu Royalty
were allowed to wear
Blue Crane feathers.

Blue Cranes need grasslands to
live in, and because
we have kept large grassland areas (instead of growing wattle
and gum trees on them), we have the special privilege
of Blue Cranes actually nesting
on the school property.
This year the Cranes are nesting
near the Supply Dams.
Please do not go closer than about 500m - they
are very sensitive and could leave the nest
if disturbed.

The best way to help Blue Cranes
survive is to make sure
their habitat - grassland - remains healthy. In this country
many grasslands are in danger of being planted to trees, for
paper. So use less paper, and recycle what you use.
